The auditorium is dark, with the exception of the spotlight illuminating the stage. Nine women wearing swimsuits and evening gowns walk across the stage to the excitement of the crowd.

Family and spectators scream out their names, while the judges judge them on grace, poise, talent and fitness. This was the scene Sunday when the new 2008 Miss ISU was crowned.

After the final competition, the contestants lined up to await the judges' verdict.

Al Perone, one of the co-directors of the pageant, announced the winners: the third runner-up is Carolyne Holcomb, the second runner -up and winner of the interview portion is Taylor Schaffer, the first runner-up is Caitlin Hoskins, and the new 2008 Miss ISU is Erica Eisenhut. Holcomb and Eisenhart tied in the talent contests.

"I'm excited about representing ISU at the Miss Indiana pageant," Eisenhut said. The competitions began at 3 p.m. in Tilson Auditorium. During the pageant, emceed by Perone, the contestants gave interviews, performed talents, and showed off their moves in bathing suits and formal gowns.

Wandell Gabey, the administrative assistant of the College of Education's department of curriculum, instruction, and media technology, worked with the ladies backstage. "The dressing room is a frantic mix of hairspray, pantyhose, and make up," Gabe said.

While the pageant was all about crowning the new Miss ISU, there were performances by several different groups. The contestants' escorts performed a dance routine dedicated to the contestants. Past Miss ISUs also performed.

Lindsey England (winner of the swimsuit competition), Ashley Collins (winner of the Sycamore Spirit and the People's Choice awards), Dianne Ziegler, Maggie Bailey, and Tory Draper were also contestants.

"The most challenging part is the anticipation," Eisenhut said. "Just standing and waiting is tough."

Frank Ricketts, the co-director of the Miss Indiana pageant said Eisenhut will represent ISU at the 2008 Miss Indiana pageant next June 23 and 24 for preliminaries and, if Eisenhut advances to the finals, on June 26.

Miss Indiana, Nicole Rash, was also on hand during intermission for photos and helped introduced herself and answered a few questions before the crowning of the new Miss ISU.

Rash had some advice for Eisenhut. "It's a lot of hard work, get involved, go to as many things as possible," she said.

"This year we had wonderful talent and wonderful women," Perone said. "I knew we were going to have several section winners. It was going to be difficult."
